Ellen's mom to speak at OSU Awareness Week

by Sheri Atkinson Columbus--The Ohio State University office of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Services and the Bisexual, Gay, and Lesbian Alliance are sponsoring Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Week, January 24 through January 31, at the university.

The purpose of Awareness Week is to increase visibility and awareness of GLBT issues on the OSU campus. Programs are designed to educate all members of the university community, and to provide social opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. This year's Awareness Week theme, "In Good Company," celebrates the wonderfully diverse GLBT community and the many unique and inspiring individuals that comprise the community. There will be programs and activities for both the gay and non-gay community, that will include speakers and presenters, art displays and exhibits, and a dance and comedy night.

Ellen's mom and Human Rights campaign spokesperson Betty DeGeneres will be

one of the guest speakers during the week. A list of activities follows. Please come and be part of the celebration!

Saturday, January 24

H.I.S.Kings perform at Woody's Place in the Ohio Union, 10 pm. This is an entertaining show put on by local drag kings. Monday, January 26

Brown Bag Lunch with Jennifer Terry, "Thinking and Being Queer," a discussion about what it means to be "queer" and how that affects the gay community. Ohio Union Buckeye Suite A, 11:30-1 pm.

The Brown Bag lunch series offers informal discussions over lunch. Feel free to bring something to eat as we chat.

Fireside Chat about OSU GLB history, Kuhn Honor House, 8:00 pm. Tuesday, January 27

Brown Bag Lunch: "Lesbian Parenting" This will be a panel of lesbians who have children through various experiences. Come hear their stories and ask questions. Buckeye Suite A, Ohio Union, 11:30-1 pm. Cosponsored by Women's Student Services.

Same Sex Relationships: Finding and Keeping a Mate. This workshop will provide information, resources and skills to help participants to enhance the possibility of finding and keeping a romantic partner. Homosexuality in Literature. Presentation on the works of Sappho, the Greek poet and lesbian. "Finding Affirming Work Places: Strategies for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual JobSeekers." Finding a job after graduation can be a stressful process. Identifying organizations with affirming work places creates an added challenge for many GLB job seekers. By attending this program, you'll learn strategies for networking with GLB professionals and assessing organizational climate. General job-search strategies will be discussed as time permits. Betty DeGeneres, mother of actress Ellen DeGeneres, speaks on the need for the parents of lesbians and gay men to come out and support their children. DeGeneres became a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign shortly after her daughter came out last spring, traveling the country speaking at community functions and appearing in the media.
